We kept busy after school
Our gang from '48
We baby-sat and delivered papers
Never ever did we date
We were just a group of high school kids
Who liked to have some fun
We managed to do just that
And tried everything under the sun
We never thought of anything
That kids seem to do today
We ran and jumped and kicked the ball
Didn't dare to come home late
The biggest thrill that I recall
That the group of us did crave
Was to save our pennies for many weeks
To have a most exciting Saturday
The circus had just come to town
For that weekend in the fall
We talked about it every day
Whenever meeting in the hall
We all assembled at the stop
Where the bus made a trip to town
We were hoping to get there early
To see the most famous clown
We clutched our tickets tightly
Had our bus fare tucked away
We had to get a transfer
To another line miles away
The leader of our stalwart group
Took roll call as we got on
And again as we got off to catch
The transfer into town
I don't remember much about
The circus or the clown
The fun was in the planning
And the exiting trip downtown
Such carefree golden days they were
And we thought it was such a dare
The grandkids yawned when I related it
Oh, to be so innocent and so free of care.
