Doing What Moms Do
crawling on the floor with me
you were everything but sophisticated
singing corny songs to me
you were anything but refined
sitting on the grass with me
you were anything but impeccable

sharing your ice cream with me
you were anything but selfish
cleaning my boo boo with spit and a Kleenex
you were anything but snobby
wrapping your arms around my cold shoulders
you were everything but stingy

arguing over current events with me
you were everything but submissive
stopping me from ruining my future
you were anything but lax
forgetting screw-ups and let-downs
you were everything but cruel

taking time to talk to me
about sex, drugs, abortion and death
listening to me when I sounded off
on the things that made me so mad
picking me up from practice
so I didn't have to walk home

walking with me on the first day of school
holding my hand at the doctor
making me dinner for one
all of these things have you done for me, mom
verbs of time tempered by feelings
doing what came natural to you,
that's just what moms do
